Airtel Nigeria's CEO, Balsingh, has raised concerns over the stagnation of telecom tariffs in Nigeria, which have remained unchanged for over a decade despite a significant surge in operational costs.
Balsingh pointed out that the current tariff structure is no longer sustainable due to the dramatic rise in expenses, which have escalated by more than 300% in just the past 18 to 24 months. He highlighted the necessity of adjusting tariffs to align with these economic realities to continue delivering high-quality services and meeting the ever-increasing demand for digital connectivity.
The CEO emphasized that maintaining and expanding telecommunications infrastructure requires substantial investment, particularly as digital services become more integral across various sectors, including education, banking, and healthcare. He noted that the rising demand for digital services necessitates continuous network upgrades, which come at a significant cost that must be proportionately shared to ensure long-term viability.
Why Tariff Adjustments Are Crucial
Balsingh explained that the proposed tariff adjustments aim to secure the sustainability of the telecom sector while simultaneously enhancing service delivery. The changes would facilitate the expansion of network coverage, improve network security, and support the adoption of advanced technologies, ultimately enhancing connectivity for Nigerians.
He stated that these adjustments are designed to ensure that no one is left behind in Nigeria's digital transformation journey, and emphasized the importance of gradual implementation to support the financial stability of customers.
Gradual Implementation for Customer Support
According to ThisDay, Balsingh reiterated Airtel's unwavering commitment to quality service. He acknowledged the necessity of tariff adjustments but stressed the importance of implementing these changes gradually to accommodate customers' financial situations. This measured approach will enable Airtel to invest in capacity, extend coverage, and improve service delivery, thereby ensuring that Nigeria remains competitive in the global digital landscape.
Balsingh emphasized that the proposed tariff adjustments are essential for the long-term sustainability of the telecom sector and will contribute to Nigeria's growth as a leading digital economy on the continent.
