Pastor Enoch Adeboye, the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, publicly apologized for his earlier statement saying that Christians who do not pay tithes may not enter heaven. During a youth gathering at the RCCG Youth Convention in Ogun State, he referred to his previous remarks as a “mistake” and clarified that the Bible emphasizes peaceful and holy living as the true prerequisites for reaching heaven.
“I apologize for saying, ‘If you don’t pay tithe, you might not make it to heaven.’ That’s wrong and not biblical,” he stated, emphasizing that the scripture teaches followers to “follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see God.”
Adeboye further explained the complexity of being “right and wrong at the same time,” citing scientific discoveries about light as an analogy. He noted that limiting tithes to 10% can be misleading, suggesting that such a percentage should be seen as a starting point.
He shared an inspiring story about a man who pledged to donate N3.5 million during a fundraising event. This man, who began a business with $500 and promised to give God ninety percent of his profits, later reported a turnover of $50 million. Adeboye concluded by reflecting on his own giving, acknowledging that while he hasn't reached ninety percent, he has surpassed ten percent, urging congregants to rethink their approach to tithing.
