Telegram CEO Pavel Durov Arrested In France, Why

Pavel Durov, the Russian billionaire and founder of the messenger app Telegram, was arrested by French officers at Le Bourget Airport customs outside Paris on August 24, 2024. The arrest took place immediately after he exited his private jet.

The specific reason for his arrest has not been disclosed yet, but it is related to complicity in several illegal charges due to the lack of moderation on the encrypted Telegram messaging platform. French authorities believe that Telegram's access to malicious elements makes it an "accomplice in drug trafficking, pedo criminal offenses, and fraud". Durov had risked traveling to France despite knowing he could be detained. His arrest was based on an arrest warrant issued by the French National Judicial Police as part of a preliminary investigation. 

Pavel Durov is widely known for co-founding and being the CEO of Telegram Messenger, which offers end-to-end encryption in voice and video calls. Telegram's mixed nature as both a private communication method and a social media-like platform has led to its use by various groups, including pro-democracy protesters and extremist users. Despite efforts to ban illegal content, Telegram remains a platform with minimal restrictions, allowing misinformation and extremist views.
